There is a minor development in sight regarding registration certificates. Starting from mid-June, new cards will be issued with a fresh design and enhanced security features. Keep reading for more details.

In 2014, the RDW introduced the credit card-sized vehicle registration certificate, and now, ten years later, a renewed version is being released. Starting from mid-June, the new registration cards will be issued, characterized by a new design, different security features, a modified backside, and a new contact chip. It's important to note that previously issued registration certificates will remain valid. Another significant change is the discontinuation of issuing conformity certificates for light commercial vehicles. This document contained additional information regarding permissible dimensions, weights, and towing data of vehicles.
The changes in the registration certificate are part of a renewal process following the expiration of the production contract, which concluded after 10 years. The RDW seized this opportunity to revise the registration certificate, with the new appearance, contact chip, and adjusted security features being the most noticeable adaptations. Some of these security features are not immediately visible or tangible and require, for example, a UV lamp for detection.
Another change concerns the information on the backside of the registration certificate, where only mandatory data relevant to the respective vehicle category will be listed. For example, the number of seating positions will no longer be mentioned on the registration certificate of a trailer or car.
Lastly, we would like to inform you about a recent development regarding vehicle crime. The National Intelligence and Expertise Center for Vehicle Crime has reported an increase in criminals selling rented or leased cars with counterfeit documents, resulting in a rise in reports of embezzlement. This underscores the importance of the renewed security features on the registration certificate.
